Become. Yourself.
“Maybe it’s only possible to become yourself by losing who you expected to be over and over and over again.”
…I’ve been searching high & low for the source of that quote all week and even though for the life of me I can’t find it, I had to share it with you because it’s been circling in my head, especially after a conversation I recently had with a friend.
My friend just turned 60 and I was genuinely surprised that instead of any joy for her past adventures or excitement at a new decade, she only felt disappointment.
“I’m just not where I thought I would be in my life at this point,” she confessed to me.
Oof. That one got me.
While our brain is busy telling ourselves so many stories —I haven’t done enough, I’ll never accomplish my goals, everyone is ahead of me, etc. etc. etc.— our soul is wishing we’d take a beat and notice the good (and ease) that’s available to us when we drop the expectations of how we think things should be and instead, appreciate what is.
But easier said than done sometimes, right?
Like many women in my circle I’m a caretaker of my aging parent in addition to being a business owner, so I know life throws curveballs that lead to disappointment, anxiety, regret, and more.
How do I deal?
What I’m trying lately is a practice in teaching my brain to reframe. When I can’t seem to get out of a funk I grab a piece of paper and make three quick columns. Here’s what I do with them:
01. First, I write out what I’m thinking (e.g. Today is my 60th birthday and I’m not where I want to be in life.) in the first column.
02. Then, I write out how that makes me feel (not so hot!) in a second column.
03. Column 3 I write what seems to manifest when I’m thinking and feeling this way (e.g. I don’t take any action, I stay stuck)
then rinse and repeat but with a new, more positive thought which can lead to a new feeling and new action. (e.g. I’m grateful for the lessons life has taught me up to this point; I’m glad I’m still here to learn more and I’m inspired to take on a new adventure)
…this is how I get myself to reframe thoughts/feelings that are keeping me stuck aka how to get my Thought Machine working properly ;)
I encourage you to give it a try and see if it helps you give yourself more grace in those moments that might feel less than stellar.
With love,
Laurie
